It consists of:

• A barrel (outer cylindrical housing)

• A screw (rotating shaft with flights inside the barrel)

1. Feeding Zone:

   • Resin granules are fed into the barrel via a hopper.

   • The screw conveys the material forward.

   • Minimal melting occurs here.

2. Compression Zone:

   • Temperature rises, and polymer begins to melt.

   • Material is compressed and homogenized.

3. Metering Zone:

   • Final melting and mixing occurs.

   • Material is pressurized and pushed to the die.

Some advanced screws have a mixing zone or barrier design to improve performance.

The Screw Barrel must withstand:

• High temperatures

• Abrasion from fillers or pigments

• Corrosion from certain resins

An Extrusion Candle Filter is a tubular, high-pressure melt filtration component used in plastic extrusion systems to remove contaminants and impurities from the molten polymer.
